A major disruption at Channel Tunnel caused Eurostar delays and last-minute cancellations. This development disadvantaged many who were travelling to fulfil their New Year's Eve plans. One traveller, Floriaen Dullaert, trying to reach London from Amsterdam, came up with a creative solution to reach his destination without additional costs.

A fire at a Swiss ski resort bar disrupted New Year's Eve celebrations. As a result, 40 people died and 116 were injured. According to the police, 83 people are still in the hospital. The venue was identified as unsafe because of a low ceiling covered in acoustic foam and only one exit from the club.

The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, was captured by the US in Operation Absolute Resolve which involved over 150 aircraft and months of anticipation and planning. President Donald Trump accused Maduro of drug trafficking and stated that the US "will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition."

The first week of January has brought major developments in world politics and uncertainty about what to expect next. Time will tell what Trump's next moves will be and what will happen to Venezuela.
