During this year's Winter Olympic Games which took place in Italy, there was a controversy involving one of the Ukrainian athletes. The International Olympic Committee has decided to ban a Ukrainian skeleton racer, Vladyslav Heraskevych, from the Milan-Cortina Games after he wore a helmet displaying images of athletes and children who died during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Some of the people depicted on the helmet were known to the athlete personally. This decision by the IOC is based on Rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter, which stipulates that no demonstration of political, religious, or racial propaganda is permitted at Olympic venues. The Olympic body considered that the helmet violated this rule.

Following this decision, the athlete's Olympic accreditation was revoked. However, the IOC subsequently announced the reinstatement of his accreditation, allowing him to remain at the Games to support his Ukrainian teammates, but unfortunately without overturning the initial sanction related to his participation.

He appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge the decision, arguing that the images on his helmet were an act of commemoration and not a political statement. During the week preceding the sanction, the IOC had allowed the athlete to wear his helmet for training sessions and even when he was in the mixed zone reserved for the media. Some fans could say that the decision is justified, some would say it's hypocritical from the IOC as they allowed another athlete to have the Russian flag on their helmet although the country is banned from participating.
